چکیده

This paper uses a multiscale statistical framework to estimate groundwater travel times and to derive conditional travel time probability densities. In the applications of interest here travel time uncertainties depend primarily on uncertainties in hydraulic conductivity. These uncertainties can be reduced if the travel times are conditioned on scattered measurements of hydraulic conductivity and/or hydraulic head. In our approach the spatially discretized log hydraulic conductivity is modeled as a multiscale stochastic process, where each scale describes the process at a di€erent spatial resolution. Related dependent variables such as hydraulic head and travel time are approximated by discrete linear functions of the log conductivity. The linearization makes it possible to incorporate these variables into ecient multiscale estimation and conditional simulation algorithms. We illustrate the application of these algorithms by considering two options for estimating travel time densities: (1) a Monte Carlo technique which only requires linearization of the groundwater ̄ow equation and (2) a Gaussian approximation which also requires linearization of Darcy's law and an implicit particle tracking equation. Both options provide reasonable estimates of the travel time probability density in a synthetic experiment if the underlying log hydraulic conductivity variance is small (0.5). When this variance is increased (to 5.0), the Monte Carlo result is still quite good but the Gaussian approximation is unsatisfactory. The multiscale Monte Carlo option is a very competitive approach for estimating travel time since it provides accurate results over a wide range of conditions and it is more computationally ecient than competing alternatives. Conceptual Modeling of Contaminated Solute Transport Based on Stream Tube Model

In this study, we performed a conceptual modeling on solute transport based on theoretical stream tube model (STM) with various travel time distributions assuming a pure convective flow through each tube in order to investigate how the lengths and distributions of solute travel time through STM affect the breakthrough curves at the end mixing surface. The conceptual modeling revealed that 1) th...

Solute flux approach to transport through spatially nonstationary flow in porous media

A theoretical framework for solute flux through spatially nonstationary flows in porous media is presented. The flow nonstationarity may stem from medium nonstationarity (e.g., the presence of distinct geological layers, zones, or facies), finite domain boundaries, and/or fluid pumping and injecting. This work provides an approach for studying solute transport in multiscale media, where random ...

Time-variant Lagrangian transport formulation reduces aggregation bias of water and solute mean travel time in heterogeneous catchments

Lack of hydro-bio-chemical data at subcatchment scales necessitates adopting an aggregated system approach for estimating water and solute transport properties, such as residence and travel time distributions, at the catchment scale. In this work, we show that within-catchment spatial heterogeneity, as expressed in spatially variable discharge-storage relationships, can be appropriately encapsu...

An Alternative Approach to Centroids and Connectors Pattern: Random Intra-Zonal Travel Time

In traditional traffic assignment procedure, each traffic analysis zone is represented by one point in its geometric center which is connected to the network by several connectors. Results of studies show that different connector patterns would result up to 10% change in estimated volume and up to 20% change in total travel time. Also the different patterns of connectors can change the priority...

Probability distributions for locations of calling animals, receivers, sound speeds, winds, and data from travel time differences.

A new nonlinear sequential Monte Carlo technique is used to estimate posterior probability distributions for the location of a calling animal, the locations of acoustic receivers, sound speeds, winds, and the differences in sonic travel time between pairs of receivers from measurements of those differences, while adopting realistic prior distributions of the variables. Other algorithms in the l...
